Visiting the 3rd Grade
I learned a lot about the story of Sadako and the 1,000 paper cranes with the 3rd graders. I loved the way that they presented it as well, it was extremely cute and held my attention. At the same time though, it was a sad story and enhanced my understanding about all the pain that the Japanese felt and how they were affected by the bomb. I am still left with the question of WHY it was only Sadako's story. Why was she special? I was wondering if there are more children that went through the same thing that she did as well... or was she especially affected more than others? "The point is that she never gave up. She continued to make paper cranes until she died."
Sadako continued staying strong- how courageous, don't you think?
I also learned that the way Japan and the US resolved conflict was through nuclear weapons. Although that is quite sad, it was something new that I learned about resolving wars. In order to make the world safe from nuclear weapons, we should come up with a new way to make countries prestigious, rather than them having respect just because other countries know that they have nuclear weapons- and that they're dangerous.
Taking Things Step by Step
We should encourage the ES students to stop fighting with one another and for them to stop learning about how "cool" and "powerful" nuclear weapons are. They should be constantly learning about other ways to encourage peace in our community and world in general. We should find more ways to stop conflict in our school by engaging in more collaborative decision making. Although this only involves our community only, it is a step toward peace in the world. This way, the ES students will have already learned to work with one another so that when they grow up, and are capable of involving themselves more in the UN and peace projects- they will, and will be interested!
STAND UP FOR PEACE
The video below encourages all of us to "Stand up for Peace"... It enforces the idea of taking a little step in order to start a peace movement. Consider it.
